The short version

We collect as little information as Strivli genuinely needs to work, we never sell or advertise with it, and a child using Strivli never has their own email address, password, or full surname on file. If you want to see your child's data, you can do that yourself from their dashboard — you don't need to email anyone. Deletion works the same way if your child's account is one you manage directly; if they're enrolled through a tutor, your request goes to the tutor to action, since it's their business record to manage.

What we collect

If you're a child using StrivliFirst name, last initial, year group, an exam date if one's been set, and a record of which questions you've practised and how you did — never your email, password, date of birth, or full surname.
If you're a parent or guardianYour name, email address, a securely hashed password (we can never see the actual password), your relationship to the child, and a timestamp of your consent for them to use Strivli.
If you're a tutorYour name, email address, a securely hashed password, and your business name if you have one.
Tutor working notesIf your child is enrolled through a tutor, that tutor can keep private working notes about them, the same way a teacher would in a school. The tutor is the controller of these notes — Strivli never shows them to a parent or the child, under any circumstances — and they're deleted along with the rest of the child's record.

Why we collect it, and on what basis

For a child's data, the legal basis is parental consent — a parent or tutor creates the account and holds the consent record; a child never signs up themselves. For a parent's or tutor's own account details, the basis is contract — providing the service they signed up for.

Practice data exists to run the service itself: serving the right questions, tracking progress so a parent or tutor can see how things are going, sending parents a short weekly summary email (this is on by default — you can turn it off at any time from your child's dashboard, or with the one-click link in any of those emails), and — when a child taps to ask for help on a question — sending it to an AI helper for a plain-language explanation.

Who we share it with

Nobody, except: when a child asks our AI helper ("Smarty Pants") to explain a question, the question text and their answer is sent to OpenAI, our AI provider. We send it through their business API, which means it is not used to train their models. If they type a follow-up question of their own, that text — and the last few messages of that conversation — is sent too, so we ask children not to type their name, school, or address into it, and the helper never asks for one. What we send is the question and the answer, never your child's name, and it is not stored by us once the explanation comes back. We never sell data, and we never use it for advertising.

The same AI provider also helps write that weekly parent email, which is sent unless you turn it off. For it we send a short, anonymised summary — topic names and how practice went that week, never the child's name, year group or anything else that identifies them — so Smarty Pants can suggest one useful thing to try next. If that fails for any reason, the email still goes out with a suggestion worked out by the app itself.

If your child is enrolled through a tutor, that tutor is the data controller of their own students' records — Strivli processes the data on their behalf, the same way a school's own software would.

If your child moves between a tutor and your own family account, who controls their record changes with them, and it only ever happens with your agreement. A tutor can ask to take your child on; nothing moves unless you accept, and you're shown exactly what moves before you decide. Going the other way, you can ask for your child's account back at any time — their practice history comes with them either way, and you keep the same view of it throughout. The one thing that doesn't travel is a tutor's own private working notes: those stay with the tutor who wrote them, as their professional record, and you've never been able to see them in either case. There's more detail in the guide on moving to a tutor and the one on moving back.

How long we keep it

While a child's account is active, we keep their practice history so progress can be tracked over time — that's the whole point of the service. If a tutor or parent archives a student (because they've finished, moved on, or paused), we keep the record for 12 months in case they come back, and then it is permanently deleted — not just hidden.

Practice papers a tutor uploads. Tutors can import questions from a past paper by uploading it. That's the tutor's own document rather than anything about your child, but it does sit on our server for a while, so here is what happens to it. Once the tutor has finished reviewing the questions, we keep the uploaded file and the page images made from it for 90 days, so the import can be reopened and corrected if something was transcribed wrongly. After that both are automatically deleted. The questions themselves stay, because those are what your child practises with.

Your rights, and how to actually use them

You can download or delete your own child's data yourself, any time, from their dashboard — no request form, no waiting on an email.

Every child's dashboard in the parent portal has a "Your data" section with a Download my data button (everything we hold about their practice, as a file you can keep) and a Request deletion button. If your child is in a family account you manage directly, deletion happens immediately. If your child is enrolled through a tutor, the tutor is notified to action it themselves, since it's their business record to manage — but the request is logged either way, so it's never just a message that disappears into an inbox.

Keeping this honest

We register with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as required for any service handling personal data, and we've assessed this product specifically against the ICO's Children's Code, since it's built for 10–12 year-olds. If you'd like more detail than this page covers, ask and we'll provide it.

👋

Hi! Here's what Strivli knows about you

We know your first name, what year group you're in, and which questions you've practised — including whether you got them right, so we can figure out what to give you next.

We don't ask for your email address, your password, your birthday, or your last name. You don't even need your own login — the grown-up who set up your account looks after that part. If you learn with a tutor, they can also write private notes to themselves about how to help you, the same way a teacher does — you and your parent don't see those.

🙈

Who gets to see it

Your parent or tutor can see how you're doing — that's the whole point, so they know what to help you with. Nobody else can see your name or your results, and there's no way for another kid using Strivli to see anything about you.

🤖

When you ask Smarty Pants for help

If you tap to ask Smarty Pants to explain a question, we send that question to the computer helper that writes the explanation — never your name. If you type your own follow-up question, that gets sent too, so don't type your name, your school, or where you live — Smarty Pants doesn't need any of that to help you.

Smarty Pants also helps write a little email to your grown-up once a week about how your practice is going. For that we only send the topic names and how you did — like "fractions, going well". Your name isn't sent for that either.

If you ever want it gone

Ask your parent or your tutor. If your parent set up your account themselves, they can delete it straight away. If you learn with a tutor, your parent asks the tutor and the tutor does it — it can take a little while, but it does get done. It's your info, and it's always their call to make with you.
